Sylvie Marchand

An anthropologist and film director, Sylvie Marchand was also trained as a circus artist. Her creative practice revolves around anthropological, ethical and aesthetic questions raised by the circulation of humans and the mutation of forms of mobility in today's world. She coordinates the Gigacircus new media art group who collaboratively create nomadic art works in order to question the cultural implications of mobility and the ritual roots in art, utilising today's tools (mobile phones, interactive digital installations, land art, photography, sound walks, performances). Each stage of their creations – which have been presented in Mexico, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt, and the USA, Canada and Europe – is based on encounter and on mobility: from the subjects and issues addressed (pilgrimage, nomadism, migration, exile) to the diffusion devices, offering us renewed visions of the world through sensory journeys.
